What a run finds and fixes, shot by shot

Worked examples of what comes back. Each one shows the video, the score, the shot that broke and the fix written for it. The last one is a real run where the broken shot got regenerated.

The first 3 videos and their frames are re-creations made for this page. Their scores use the exact arithmetic a real run uses: a serious break counts three, a garment or a moved prop two, and light one, and that total is measured against the number of shots and taken off 1.00. Case study 04 is a real test video, with its real report and the real fix.

01Case study

Interview-style monologue, one room, generated shot by shot

What it found

Hair changed between the wide shot and the closer shot of her. Nothing in the scene explains it. Rated high, since hair is part of how a face reads.

Evidence

The first clear look at her is shot 3. Held next to shot 17, the parting is on the other side and the length is different.

Fix

Regenerate shot 17 with the hair from shot 3 as the reference. Keep the room, the light and the framing as they are.

What it found

Nothing broke. Four people, two rooms and a street were tracked all the way through and every later shot matched its first appearance.

Evidence

All 21 shots still come with their review: place, light, weather, camera and six to ten checks each, marked as set, still matching or out of view. Scrub through and you see the working instead of taking the score on trust.

Fix

Nothing to change. This is what a clean run looks like.

03Case study

Music-video style cut, same table dressed for every shot

What it found

A record on the table moved between cuts, the room got noticeably cooler and greener halfway through, and one jacket came back a different jacket.

Evidence

Three problems, three pairs of frames. They came from different reads: the room read caught the record moving, the people read caught the jacket.

Fix

Three fixes, one per problem. Put the record back where it sits in shot 2. Bring the second half's light back to the warm white of the opening. Rebuild the jacket shot from the first clear look at her, in the leather jacket.

The whole run, step by step

What it found

All three planted breaks and nothing else. In shot 5 the figure and the box swapped sides of the room. In shot 6 the wall turned from dark blue to brown. The insert and the shot out on the lawn are different places, so it left them alone.

What the fix did

I pressed Fix this shot on the wall. The first draft put the blue back and left the figure, the box and the window where they were, and the automatic check agreed. The swap was harder. Two tries redrew shot 5 and kept the figure and the box on the wrong sides, so that one stays a written fix to regenerate by hand.
